Football is almost a religion in Argentina and the Association Football League was founded in 1891. The Torneos Apertura and Clausura are presently contested by twenty clubs each season, but only nine have won the title. The competition is dominated by the so called "big two" - River Plate and Boca Juniors - who have won 12 titles between them since 1992, with Vélez Sársfield, Racing Club, Independiente, Newell's Old Boys, Estudiantes and Lánus winning the others.
